This is the ugly duckling in the family of pumpkin and cucumber. You can also find it as sopropo. It has quite a bitter taste. When Roald Dahl decribed the ‘snozcumber’ in his famous book The Big Friendly Giant, he probably took this wrinkly, big, green cucumber for an example.

Cooking with bitter melon:

Wash it, cut in half lengthwise and remove the seeds, slice it in parts and bake it with an onion and garlic (quickly ready), or fill with meat mixture and let it cook in the oven.

Is sopropo healthy?

It makes up for its appearance by being packed with vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B11 and C) and minerals (magnesium, phosphorus, iron and zinc). It is also a natural antibiotic. The real beauty of this vegetable comes from within!

Storage:

In the fridge you can preserve bitter melon five to seven days. If it’s chopped, consume within a day.

In The Netherlands you can buy bitter melon at supermarkets and exotic groceries.
