What is layered cake chocolate?
This sweet treat is only served on special occasions, because it is quite laborious to make it yourself; layer by layer the cake must be baked. Luckily you can buy the fresh spekkoek now so you don’t have the hassle. The Dutch name ‘spekkoek’ (baconcake) is caused by its’ resemblance with streaky bacon, called speck in Indonesia, where this treat originates.
In this chocolate variety, the dark, rich, spicy layers alternate with lighter layers of chocolatecake.
Cooking with layered cake chocolate:
It is delicious as a dessert with vanilla ice cream, but just a little piece with your coffee or tea is also recommended.
The layered cake is best preserved when you wrap it in plastic foil and keep in the refrigerator.
